Abstract

Against the backdrop of increasingly close China–Vietnam cooperation under the “Belt and Road” Initiative, the demand for Chinese language learning among university students in Ho Chi Minh City has continued to grow. This study focuses on the role of three major social media platforms—YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook—in facilitating Chinese language learning and commu-nication among this group. Using a mixed research method, the study com-bines a questionnaire survey of 251 university students in Ho Chi Minh City with in-depth interviews of 20 learners to explore the functions, characteristics, effects, and challenges of social media in enhancing learners’ interest in and practical ability with the Chinese language. Based on these findings, the study proposes optimization suggestions from the perspectives of platforms, content creators, and educators, such as building multi-platform linkages and improving content quality. The aim is to provide a reference for promoting cross-cultural exchange and mutual understanding between China and Vietnam.
