An Exploration of the Causes and Coping Strategies for Pragmatic Failure in Senior High School Students’ English Writing

The study examines the causes and coping strategies for pragmatic failure in senior high school students’ English writing. With reference to curriculum standards and theoretical frameworks, it identifies seven primary sources of pragmatic failures through the analysis of approximately 300 student essays and relevant literature. The research adopts a mixed-methods approach. Based on the findings, six practical teaching strategies are proposed, such as enhancing pragmatic awareness, utilizing situation-bound utterances(SBUs), incorporating intercultural perspectives, and optimizing feedback. The study aims to shift the focus from mere grammatical accuracy to contextual appropriateness, thereby helping students minimize pragmatic failures and achieve more effective cross-cultural written communication.
