When the Land Begins to Cry Out: A Book Review of Dust Bowl: The Southern Plains in the 1930s

Abstract

This article focuses on Donald Worster's classic work of environmental history, Dust Bowl: The Southern Plains in the 1930s, exploring how he interprets the 1930s Dust Bowl disaster on the American Southern Plains as an ecological crisis driven by the cultural logic of capitalism. Worster points out that this disaster stemmed not only from natural environmental variations but was also the consequence of predatory exploitation and an industrialized agricultural system disrupting ecological balance. Through his analysis of land commodification, agricultural capitalization, and the loss of a "sense of place" within local communities, he reveals the alienation of human-earth relations in the process of modernization. In terms of historical sources, Worster integrates a wide array of materials, including government archives, scientific data, media reports, and oral histories, demonstrating the interdisciplinary nature of environmental history research.
