Against the background of rural revitalization and high-quality development in basic education, the professional development of rural physical education teachers is facing new practical requirements. Taking Zhaoqing City as an example, this study draws on questionnaire data from 186 rural physical education teachers and uses descriptive statistics, factor analysis, and mediation effect analysis to examine the current status, dilemmas, and mechanisms of their professional development. The findings show that the professional development of rural physical education teachers is characterized by "stable foundations but structural imbalance". Only 48.7% of the teachers reported a relatively high level of enthusiasm for career development; 57.2% showed moderate or higher occupational burnout, and the mediating effect of professional identity accounted for 52.3%. The study indicates that the main problem has shifted from insufficient resource supply to inadequate transformation efficiency within the development mechanism. It is therefore necessary to optimize institutional supply, strengthen organizational support, and activate professional identity so as to promote a shift in professional development from externally driven growth to endogenous development.
